Wednesday Cool Links: Laser Experiments,...

Look! Bird (-shaped bullets) made holes in bird... feathers! Well, not quite, although that would have been awesome too. Actually we were doing some nitrogen-assisted laser tests on various regular, i.e. boring materials, such as plywood and mat board. Then I came across some feathers and here's what it turned out to be:

Now that we have attention, let's get distracted by some links:

Vector Engraved Stipples
StippleGen in a program that will convert an artwork into CNC-ready image for use on the Eggbot or in other contexts. What happens if you take that stippled art and laser engrave it? This is what guys at rasterweb did.
SolarImpulse
Solar-powered plane that can fly day and night without fuel. Sends shivers down my spine, that's how cool it is.
NYC Elevation Map by kylemcdonald – Machine Halts FTW
Topographical map data interpreted in 3D printing by MakerBot Artist-In-Residence Kyle McDonald.
New Infrared spectacles fool facial recognition systems
An interesting anonymity tool for anti-facial recognition. Umm... like nobody won't remember this rig on your face?
Gadgets advertised in a 1962 issue of "Famous Monsters of Filmland"
The MONSTER inside the Black Box. Heh - sounds familiar!

Well, that didn't make any sense: to attract attention and then bring it to something else... Well, this is how it works these days: attention deficit is all the rage... How about some fruit dip then?

Wednesday Cool Links: Bioluminescence, F...

Keep warm! What else can I say... This is the season of thermosocks, spice chai, frozen windshields and many layers. For those who are not hibernating just yet, here's a weekly dose of entertainment: Bioluminescent Bacteria Lamp I want one! Hopefully no bacteria were hurt in this lighting experiment, and they were all paid accordingly […]

Rick and Morty Portal Gun

Every year a group of my friends have an engineering Secret Santa. The rules are simple: make something cool for under $20 that requires engineering to complete. In years past we’ve seen Google cardboard VR headsets that are 6DOF, match stick rockets, 3D printed fans that explode when used, 3D printed rockets with cardboard launch […]

Book Project Parts Bundles

We've had many requests to sell the parts needed to build the robots described in the books that we carry. You are now able to purchase the individual components needed to build your bot, but you're not required to take them all(Sorry, no instructions -- that's what the book is for!). If you've got resistors […]

Interesting Mini-sumo build

This mini-sumo design by Jeremy Bloyd-Peshkin features our wheels, and one of our favourite building materials, Sintra. We can't laser-cut sintra (PVC=bad stuff when burned), but milling it works well, as this builder shows. The asymmetric motor layout works, as proven by this contest-winning design (scroll to the bottom of the page).
