RW2i - Internal mount, and new shaft hol...

We're still digging out the new inventory, and the next addition to the Solarbotics lineup is the RW2i, which is the same profile and rolling size as our very popular RW2, but is designed with a narrow hub.

We're able to do this by moving the set-screw hole inside the hub, so to cinch the screw down, you have to remove the tire from the hub, which is a pretty easy process.

We had planned to make the internal cut-out of the RW2i to allow the installation of a GM11a-14a style motor to the open side, but the manufacturing tolerance was a wee off, and we can't quite make them fit. Fortunately, it's a pretty simple process to file the edges of a GM11a-14a motor to make it fit, which has the added benefit of making the brass edges of the gearbox act as brass bushings that assist wheel alignment.

Also new to the RW2 and RW2i wheels is a new hole diameter! We've had many requests for alternate shaft sizes, so we had a limited portion of both these hubs manufactured with a 1/16" pilot hole so you can drill it out to whatever size you need!

Solar Pendulum of DOOOM blogged on MAKE

I love MAKE magazine. I always enjoy reading (then trying) the projects in each magazine. I was a bit disappointed in their last issue where they didn't cover the complete process to make gunpowder, but that's a minor complaint. I just noticed on their blog that they're talking about our Solar Pendulum kit and Christopher […]

Mark Tilden's 600 foot workbench

Well, it's more like a workbench 600 feet in the air. In his apartment. In Hong Kong. Nice view... Dig around the large image to see what cool stuff you can pick out. Gareth @ Make Magazine (where it was first posted last week) already found a "teacup Stirling Engine" at 10 o'clock (near the […]

TechBurlesque Fundraiser on January 17

As a worthy conclusion for the last workweek on Friday night we attended TechBurlesque show, which was a fundraiser for the upcoming 2014 Make Fashion Gala & Fashion Show. It was hosted by Endeavor Arts Gallery located in the downtown Calgary. In preparation to the show we have donated a bunch of electronics and glowy […]

Tech Tip: Micro Terminal Blocks

We use many, many devices with 0.1" spaced holes, which are pretty much an electronics design standard. We're finding these 0.1" space terminal blocks incredibly useful for making solid, secure, yet serviceable connections to the rest of our designs. We'll often reach for a microcontroller board, then reach for a necessary handful of these parts […]
