NEW YORK - February 12, 2001 - The WowWee Toy division of Hasbro, Inc. today introduced the first toy line to incorporate advanced "nervous network" technology. New B.I.O. Bugs (Bio-mechanical Integrated Organisms), the hit of last month's Hong Kong Toy Fair, are robotic bugs that can autonomously act by themselves, come and go as they please, identify friend or foe and have the ability to avoid or climb over obstacles in their path.

This may be our second ever post for Cool Link Wednesday, but that won't stop us from having a special theme edition! This week we opened up our very own Solarbotics Tumblr account, where we'll be posting some behind-the-scenes stuff with an R'n'D flavour. What kind of stuff, exactly? Today we had the second session of a machining workshop, where our resident expert handyman, Reg, showed us how to grind our own lathe toolings out of steel, and basic operations of putting it to work in the lathe itself. We've also covered some kit modifications and prototypes/tests, and will continue to keep some new content coming out fairly regularly.

BEP Application: Turbot
The Turbot is a member of the Scophthalmidae family of flatfish and is almost completely circular. Turbot is often found partially buried in the seabed in sand, gravel, rocks and sediment. Its fat content varies, but it usually contains roughly 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids per 100g fillet. Barring advances in genetic engineering, we will not be building that kind of Turbot. However, this kind of Turbot can be built with a soldering iron.
