Cool Link Wednesday: Yana Edition

About a million years ago (and by that, we mean 3-4) we had a crazy French intern called Jerome. He had a squiggly beard and liked to exclaim "SUPER COOL!" whenever he saw anything that caught his attention. But because he came up with neat stuff like the BeetleBot, we let him stick around. Even though he's since moved on from Solarbotics, he's still working on SUPER COOL new projects, like a car-mounted Horizontal Gyroscope Stabilization Camera System (see the below video). He's entering this for a contest at Instructables, so click here to throw a vote his way and see how it was developed.

So there's cool link #1. Last week Yana, our Russian graphic designer that enjoys a good tea and has an alarming appreciation for knives, objected to not getting credit for her "Years" link. So the rest of today's post is dedicated specifically to projects spontaneously recommended by her.

Jónófón - Paper Vinyl Record Player Jónófón - Paper Vinyl Record Player
This old-style grammophone uses a papercup and a horn made out of paper to amplify the music from the vinyl record. We think it might even use a GM8 to drive the rotation.
Eyktir - Icelandic Clock Eyktir - Icelandic Clock
Another home appliance made from paper products! This cardboard clock uses a traditional Icelandic unit of time measurement.
Visual Rain Sensor Visual Rain Sensor
Most rain meters only detect how much rain has fallen, but none detect how hard it comes down. This gauge uses a microphone to calculate a rainfall's intensity based off of the sound levels it creates.
DIY Distillation Equipment DIY Distillation Equipment
This is a pretty cool video that breaks down the process behind designing equipment that a New York distiller uses to create sugar beet vodka. (A link about vodka coming from a Russian? We'll let you come up with the stereotypical jokes. Just keep in mind that Yana really likes her knives.)
Play like a Maker - Tiny 3D Printer Playsets Play like a Maker - Tiny 3D Printer Playsets
File this one under 'Adorable': Chris, a maker from Chicago, uses his MakerBot 3D plastic printer to re-create his very own workspace on a tiny scale.

In more unfortunate news, Eduard Khil has passed away. He's probably best known for his Trololo video, which has brought many a laugh and raised eyebrow to both us and those that get to hear the tune on our hold music when calling in.

As with baking...

...DON'T FORGET ABOUT THE OVEN. You'll burn the cookies while eating the dough! Just got a new LOUD oven timer to make sure somebody is standing over the PCBs when the timer is about up. Pick and place machines tend to drown out gentle oven beeps!

Wednesday Cool Links: Laser Experiments,...

Look! Bird (-shaped bullets) made holes in bird... feathers! Well, not quite, although that would have been awesome too. Actually we were doing some nitrogen-assisted laser tests on various regular, i.e. boring materials, such as plywood and mat board. Then I came across some feathers and here's what it turned out to be: Now that […]
