Cool Link Wednesday: Nixie Chess, Makerb...

It's July 4th! That means all of our pals to the south of the border are having a grand ol' time celebrating their independence from British colonialism and extra-terrestrial invasion. So in honour of their national holiday and the fact that it's a Wednesday, we have another round of neat links to sift through.

Nixie Chess Nixie Chess Set
As always, Yana (our graphic artist) has a certain appreciation/fixation for Nixie tubes. And it's easy to see why, especially when used for this oh-so-nifty operational chess set.
Gem-in-Ring Makerbot Gem-in-Ring
Todd Blatt over at Thingiverse put his own spin on working with the Makerbot's 3D printing process, by inserting beads and gems inside of rings while they're still being printed. They become encapsulated, and make for some neat printed jewelry.
Texas Instruments Hardware Texas Instruments Hardware
Looks like Texas Instruments is on a bit of a hardware kick, releasing some interesting technology. This article from Make details some impressive applications, including a real-time projected vein viewer, projector for 3D scanning, and a touch-interface.
Baking with Steam Baking Bread with Steam
A kitchen hack? Sure! This neat-o article talks about the benefits of using steam as part of baking bread, and shows how you can use a modified pressure cooker to vent steam into the oven while you're in the process. I don't know about you, but the results sure look appetizing...
Watercolour and Ferrofluid Watercolour + Ferrofluid = Awesome
This series of photographs from Fabian Oefner shows the effects of mixing watercolours with ferrofluid (a magnetic liquid). The results are stunning. Follow the link through for a short interview with Fabian on the nature of his work.

That's all we got for this week. Happy Independence Day to our friends in the States!
