We all have family, in one form or another. Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, friends, pets... In some cases, even a delapitated, 20 year-old Honda Civic lovingly referred to as Lou. It has rust in the rear quarter panels and the steering wheel squeeks when it gets cold, but things just wouldn't be the same without ol' Lou.

So to celebrate and spend time with our loved ones, whoever they may be,  Solarbotics and HVWTech will be closed on Monday, February the 21st for Family Day. "But I don't get to celebrate Family Day where I live!" Well, we have good news - our website doesn't have any family, so you can still keep it company by dropping in, looking around, and placing an order. If you really want, you can even say hello to our answering machine and email addresses. We'll get back to you when we open on Tuesday the 22nd. You see, the office computers and phones aren't family either, so we'll be doing our best to avoid giving them any love for the day. Life is rough when you're an inanimate object. Unless your name is Lou, of course.

Interesting Mini-sumo build

This mini-sumo design by Jeremy Bloyd-Peshkin features our wheels, and one of our favourite building materials, Sintra. We can't laser-cut sintra (PVC=bad stuff when burned), but milling it works well, as this builder shows. The asymmetric motor layout works, as proven by this contest-winning design (scroll to the bottom of the page).

Solar Eclipse at SB

Today August 21, 2017, we were treated to about 80% solar eclipse. In spite of the smoke, the weather cooperated so we couldn't miss this event. Pinhole projector boxes were made out of cereal and shipping boxes: Fancy ones were mounted onto a tripod, and a phone camera recording a time lapse video was taped to […]

Aleph Objects (Lulzbot) is still alive! ...

Update: Additional information from the Loveland Reporter Herald We've been big fans of Aleph Objects' 3D printers. They fit that sorta "Prosumer" niche. A bit better than kit-builds, not quite as expensive as the big professional units. We were disappointed we got the call a few months ago relating that Aleph was looking to shut […]
