Canada Day - Closed July 1st & 2nd

This just in - our country is awesome. Now, we all know what you're thinking. "Yeah? Well my country is awesome too, and yours didn't even make it to the World Cup!" We certainly can't argue that your country is awesome as well. As for the World Cup... You wanna know what we think of the World Cup? I'LL TELL YOU WHAT WE THINK OF THE WORLD CU-BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ!

*Ahem*

As it just so happens, we can say with confidence that for July 1st our country is simply more awesome than usual because it gives us a day off work so that we can celebrate Canada Day (aka "Canada D'Eh?"). Ice cold igloos will stand tall in the snowy, -30C/-22F summer air, and maple syrup will temporarily replace the sparkling fresh spring water that normally flows forth from household taps across the country. Throngs of patriotic citizens commute via dogsled to our humble multicultural village centers, to stand in queues and engage in polite French-Canadian smalltalk. All the while wearing toques and eating Canadian bacon, of course.  The day comes to an exciting climax when ranks of Mounties, dressed in bright red uniforms and large brimmed hats, parade around on their horses while masterfully executing organized formations. And, I kid you not, the last part is completely true.

And then to follow up Canada Day, the staff at Solarbotics will be celebrating We Don't Feel Like Coming Into Work Day on Friday the 2nd. So, to recap: Solarbotics/HVW Tech will be closed on Thursday the 1st and Friday the 2nd of July. Send your emails, leave messages, place orders, etc etc. We'll get back into the swing of things on the following Monday (the 5th), and start shipping packages and addressing and correspondence we've received.

And to all of our pals to the south in the United States (and to the north in Alaska. Don't worry - we didn't forget you like the rest of your country tends to do sometimes), we hope you have a great My Country is More Awesome Than Usual Day on the 4th. We'll be really impressed (and a bit jealous) if you manage to follow it up with a We Don't Feel Like Coming Into Work Day on Monday.

New Hakko Iron & SMD LoL Shields

I wasn't very interested when the new Hakko FX-888 soldering iron showed up, but as I opened it and explored more, I got to thinking "Dang - this is a nice iron...". It's small, heavy, made-o'-metal, and of Hakko quality. And it's better than the old 936 it replaces, in practically every regard. And it […]

GM10 Wheels

These motors are simply too cool not to have wheels for, and although you can screw on a wheel to the existing motor output arms, these GM10 wheels are much more convenient. We built a micro-sumo robot ("MicroVore" - yeah, we know it means "micro-eater") for the PDXBot competition last week, and came in third […]

Everybody have a good 2010? Good...

Let's start 2011 by promoting a worthwhile event sponsored by one of our suppliers, SparkFun. Tomorrow is their 2nd "Free Day". Last year's event pretty much crashed their servers (we sent flowers of condolence). This year, they're going about it a bit wiser, offering several ways to taking advantage of their $150,000 give-away. We're big […]

Project Monday: All-Seeing Eye

This week's project is coming to you fresh from Alex, an engineer in our R&D department, with some help from Yana, our graphic designer. They've developed an enclosure based on the SAFE that accommodates sensor mounts on each side in addition to an Arduino-style board within. And after putting on some short range and long […]
