This octal (8-channel) inverter buffer chip is often referred to as the The Bicore Chip in BEAM circles. There is a multitude of purposes for this chip, from driving motors, multiplexing signals, sensor conditioning, or combinations thereof all on the same single chip!

Of the three style of 74xx240 chips, the AC style has the greatest driving current at the cost of higher switching noise and channel cross-coupling (having one channel's signal interfere with another channel).
